I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder. Thy power throughout the universe displayed. Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee... How great thou art!

i'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack

hey everybody... i am sitting at moka's in saraland right now listening to a playlist called "Chill" and there is a death cab song playing. i am at moka's posting because i don't have internet (or cable for that matter) in my room. i like coffee shops because of the free internet, not because i am emerging. haha
i am speaking at a post-prom alternative for my home church this weekend... some of my close friends are traveling with me, which makes me happy. i am not exactly "preaching" this weekend. which i am always careful with this sort of thing. but this saturday will actually be slightly topical. actually, the point is that we're focusing on three passages. (Eph. 5:22-27; Gen 3:1-6; Matt 16:21-23) the focus is relationships. i usually stray away from this topic but it is on my heart for a few reasons....

1) this song by nichole nordeman that was sung at my church on Easter sunday that made Jesus sound like a adolescent girl. ("Why?" if you like this song i am sorry, and i would be more than happy to defend my negative view of the song if you hate me now haha)

2) sex always hold high school students' attention (it's gonna be late and after some bands when i talk)

3) especially on prom night, because half the student body at boaz waits for prom night to lose their virginity

4) there is an extreme lack of male leadership and female discernment in my hometown

so anyway i am considering titling this message "why your friends are having sex right now" but i probably won't, but don't worry i wanna find something very similar that fits the message better.

as i move to the next subject know some things about me...

1) i remain an expositor, but certain situations call for a more topical message (i.e. midnight on prom night)

2) don't think i am gonna go louie giglio and do "talks" all the time

3) don't think i am gonna go cheesy youth speaker and just tell them they can get pregnant or chlamydia... the message is going to go into their specific role as a male or female, and why sex and relationships are so important!

school is almost over, which will land me outside of charlotte, nc as an intern at first baptist church indian trail. i am very excited about the summer. some reasons:

1) i get to serve God in a local body for over two months!

2) i get to serve under my mentor kevin, which is always hard but awesome

3) i may get to go to the sbc pastors' conference in greensboro and see al mohler and paige patterson debate the doctrines of grace (!)

4) i may get to go to nyc

5) i get to lead a guys bible study

6) i get to live in a major US city

7) i hope to read a few books, including
a) Life Together by Dietrich Bonhoeffer
b) Lectures to My Students by CH Spurgeon
c) Knowing God by JI Packer
d) Brothers, We Are Not Professionals by John Piper
e) The Kingdom of Christ by Russell D. Moore

8) i am gonna visit southeastern seminary (close second behind southern right now)

so yeah if you're up that way you should come see a man!

i hope this finds you well!
grace and peace,

mat
